The times they are a changin’…
About 10 seconds ago I couldn’t remember which artist sang those words, then POOF I had the answer thanks to good ol’ Google.
It was Bob Dylan, by the way…
Information is so readily available to us now that there’s no excuse not to be educated and informed.
Think about it…
20 years ago many of us would have KILLED for the opportunity to study the things we were passionate about in the comfort of our own home – WITHOUT PAYING THOUSANDS IN TUITION. But that’s where technology has taken us, and it would be a damn shame to let that go to waste.
Now you may hear certain people grumbling, “The job market is never going to be the same,” or, “All this technology is going to be the fall of our society as we know it,” and you know what I say to that?
What is it about the current job market, the current way we’re doing things, the current state of our society that people are so adamant about holding onto with this fierce death grip?
Let’s break it down…
What do we have currently in our job market?
People trading their time for money.
People stuck in the system.
People showing up grudgingly every day to jobs they hate.
And of course, people starting businesses only to find that they’re just “buying a job” for themselves.
And what do we have currently in our society?
People living paycheck to paycheck.
People suffering from anxiety and depression caused by stress.
People worrying that machines are going to take their jobs.
And people wondering why they even bother to get up and go to work every morning.
Yeah, you’re right. Let’s hold on to that
The good news here is that we’re starting to see the fall of our old systems. These old societal systems are becoming irrelevant, and the reason that’s good news is that it’s making way for something better.
Out with the old and in with the new…and if you remain too sentimental about the past, then you risk getting left there. It’s time to let go and embrace the changing times.
Now don’t get me wrong…That shit ain’t easy, but that’s what I want to talk to you about today. I want to give you some action steps to help you get over the “doom and gloom” that may edge its way into your subconscious every now and again.
You see by finding a balance between learning from the past, remaining mindful in the present, and keeping your finger on the pulse of the future. I promise, there is a way to honor the past while still living in the present and working towards building a future you can be excited about.
So let’s get to it…
Step 1 – Hit rewind for a minute
This may be hard to do but do your best to take a look at your past from a completely unbiased perspective. No judgment. Think about your experiences, your past jobs, your past societal roles, what people said you should be or had to be. Now take a moment to really meditate on the following thought…
“I don’t owe my past anything.”
See, many of us tend to hold on to the past because we feel we’ve invested so much in it. But guess what? You don’t owe it anything, and you can start fresh any time you want to.
Don’t get me wrong. By no means am I saying you should just forget your past. Your experiences, the people you’ve met, the decisions you’ve made have all gotten you here…and that deserves a HUGE amount of respect. The trick is to ACCEPT your history and your circumstances.
Step 2 – Dump that sh*t
This is going to be a daily process. Remind yourself daily to let go of your past preconceptions about what life, what society were supposed to look like. That shitty job you did for years even though you hated it…did it make you happier? Healthier? More fulfilled?
Well then let it go and don’t let it define you or your views on what’s possible for you now.
Step 3 – Break out that journal
This step is all about putting those past experiences to work for you to decide what it is you stand for. Write down what you’re afraid of. Then write down your values. Now write down how you’re going to work to avoid your worst fears coming true while remaining within the scope of your core beliefs.
Step 4 – Give yourself the credit you deserve
You’ve gotten this far, and that isn’t nothing. Stop the self-defeating thought process of, “I’m from the past; I’m a relic. All of this new technology, all of these changes don’t apply to me. I’m not cut out for it.” Bullshit! You simply have to believe that you’re worthy and capable. Because you are. I promise.
As I said, it’s not going to be easy, and I’d be lying if I said the present state of things isn’t a little scary. But listen, the old system needed to fail in order for us to innovate new ways of doing things. And to throw in my two cents, I believe our current political and economic landscape in the U.S. is probably going to be the catalyst for that.
More good news…
While change is scary, it’s also the springboard of opportunity, and right now we are witnessing the dawn of a new era of opportunity. The shining truth is, within today’s digital revolution, we ALL have more opportunities than ever before.
This is the time to WAKEUP and figure out what opportunities are right in front of your face. You need to realize that you don’t need anyone else to come and save you. You can create your own narrative of what you’d like your present and future to look like while pursuing your passions. That opportunity has never been more accessible than it is right now.
